We spent the afternoon sightseeing with our first stop to eat lunch and have ice cream at the famous Leopold's Ice Cream, which has been there since 1919. I had seen it on Paula Deen's cooking shows before as she is friends with the owner. The line was out the door the entire time we were there. It was delicious. I got to have a pimento cheese sandwich twice while we were away. You don't get pimento cheese in New Jersey, so I took advantage of having this southern food.
We spent the rest of the afternoon walking through the historical squares on Bull Street. Lots of history in Savannah. From General James Oglethorpe who founded it, John Wesley who founded the Methodist church to Forrest Gump who sat on a bus bench in Chippewa Square telling his story with his box of chocolates.
The actual bench isn't there anymore, so the sign would have to do. |
We spent the evening walking River Street, having dinner and then stopping for some famous Pralines. We also walked by the City Market, which was very lively. Last stop was walking by Paula Deen's The Lady & Sons. They weren't open, but I walked through her store the following day.
The following morning we got breakfast and while eating it started to pour. With a break in the rain we headed back to our hotel and hit the road for Sea Island.
